Après avoir connu les joies d'une major (avec une nouvelle trilogie somme toute excellente), The Divine Comedy quitte le navire amiral et décide de monter dans une barque plus maniable en créant son propre label, Divine Comedy Records. La crise du disque n'aidant pas, il sent en effet qu'il va se faire débarquer, faute de ventes suffisamment conséquentes. A cause peut-être de l'absence d'un tube ? Le fameux tube, ou ce morceau qui pourrait tout changer en passant en boucle sur les radios du monde entier. Edwyn Collins y est bien parvenu avec “A girl like you”, pourquoi pas   lui ? D'autant qu'Hannon a toujours écrit des refrains addictifs. Ses morceaux regorgent aussi de belles envolées qu'on imagine aisément tournant en boucle sur les radios. Mais rien n'y fait. Pas de hit. Et si c'était lui ? Et si c'était le single de ce nouvel LP ? “At the indie disco” a vraiment tout pour plaire : name-dropping, analyse humoristique et fine du merveilleux monde de l'indie-pop, couplets-refrain très efficaces et sucrés. Joli succès au final, mais loin du tube mondial. Et l'album alors ? Bang goes the knighthood n'est peut- être pas le plus grand disque d'une discographie high- level, mais c’est sans conteste le plus potache, à l'image d'une pochette rigolote où Neil prend son bain très moussant avec un chapeau, une pipe, et un chien. Les paroles sont souvent dans cette veine mais toujours pleine d’esprit, d’humour, et de justesse. 
La joie d'une liberté retrouvée et l'envie de goûter à tout sont bien là. L'aventure va pouvoir continuer !

With the record crisis, he feels that he will get thrown overboard because of lower sales. Maybe because there is no hit song? A hit single that could change everything by being played over and over on the radio in the whole world. Edwyn Collins did it with A girl like you, so why couldn’t Hannon? After all, he has always been writing addictive choruses. His pieces are also full of beautiful musings that are easily imagined heard on every radio. But it does not work. No hit song. What about now? What if it was the single from this new LP? “At the indie disco” is great in every way: Name-dropping, sharp and funny analysis of the amazing world of indie pop, sweet and efficient chorus and verses. A nice success, but no world hit. What about the album? 
Bang goes the knighthood may lack of consistency but is definitely the most playful album of the songwriter’s discography. Just look as the funny cover on which Neil bathes in thick lather with a hat, a pipe and a dog. But don’t be fooled and listen closely to the lyrics of all the songs and enjoy Neil’s legendary wit! Here are the joy of a regained freedom and the will to taste it all. The show can go on!
